六四事件二十周年，引起各界討論，正好談談相關的英文。

「六四事件」的「事件」，我們可以用incident來說：

Chief Executive's popularity has dropped after his controversial remarks on the June 4 incident (特首就六四事件發表具爭議的觀點後，民望下跌)。

留意incident跟中文的「事件」一樣，很少會用來形容好事，而多指壞事，例如：The incident sticks in my mind (那事件仍然縈繞心中)。

有人會用「六四鎮壓」來形容事件。「鎮壓」的英文是crackdown：

The 20th anniversary of the June 4 crackdown approaches (六四鎮壓二十周年臨近)。

Crackdown實是動詞片語(phrasal verb)crack down合成的名詞，例如：

Police are cracking down on drug dealers (警察掃蕩販毒份子)。

另一個說法是「六四屠城」，我們可以用massacre這個字：

The June 4 massacre has shocked the world (六四屠城震驚世界)。

最常聽到有關六四的口號，是「平反六四」。「平反」可用vindicate(動詞)或vindication(名詞)：

The motion calling on people to vindicate the pro-democracy movement was voted down (平反民主運動的議案不獲通過)；

Tearful pan-democrats called for the vindication of those killed in the 1989 crackdown (熱淚盈眶的泛民議員要求為1989年於鎮壓被殺的人平反)。

至於燭光集會，可用vigil：

The candle-light vigil at Victoria Park on Thursday looks set to have a high turnout (星期四的維園燭光集會看來會有很高的出席率)。

vigil即靜思的集會。句中的set作形容詞用，解作「有可能」、「準會」。
